More Grip For Your Porsche 993 Carrera [Wavetrac LSD Upgrade]

Do you want to improve Classic Porsche’s traction and grip?

Billy, a long-time owner of this 993 Carrera, is a familiar sight at car shows across the UK, tastefully modified with BBS LM wheels, a Cargraphic exhaust, a Gemballa body kit, and KW suspension, to name a few of the upgrades. While the car has been enjoyed by Billy a lot over the years, a weak point Billy wanted to solve was its traction and handling under acceleration, which is limited by the factory open differential, particularly in wet conditions and tight roundabouts. Being that Billy has some future plans for more power, and his 993 is already struggling to put the power down, it was time to upgrade from the factory open differential to a limited-slip differential.

The problem

You can feel the factory open differentials' lack of performance, particularly when you turn a corner.  For example, in the right corner, the right side of the car will become unloaded, and less traction will be available. When you press the throttle, the inside wheel will begin to slip, leaving you with an unstable feeling and a frustrating feeling of a lack of acceleration.

The reason this happens is the factory open differential has a torque bias ratio of 1:1. This means the open differential can only apply as much drive torque as there is traction at one wheel. You feel frustrated because the wheel with the most traction has the torque that the wheel with the least traction can apply to the ground.

The Solution

The Wavetrac Limited Slip Differential solves this problem. It can send up to 4.5 times the drive torque, as there is traction at one wheel. In the car, this changes a feeling of frustration to enjoyment, as you feel the outside wheel ‘pushing' you around the corner instead of experiencing a wider slide from the inside. In a straight line, traction is also improved, especially as these cars have unequal-length driveshafts, where power tends to reach the wheel with the shorter shaft first, leading to irregular tyre wear and under-optimised acceleration.

There are a lot of limited-slip differentials out there, so why choose Wavetrac? One of Wavetrac's key innovations is its patented "wave hub design", which solves a common issue with traditional ATB/gear and pinion/torque-biasing differentials. In standard setups, when one wheel loses axle load, such as when it spins, lifts off the ground, or unloads during hard cornering, the differential sends all the power to the unloaded wheel. However, the Wavetrac differential generates its own internal load, allowing it to maintain torque bias even under these conditions. This results in much more consistent traction, which is especially important for high-performance vehicles like the 993. Another patented innovation is the carbon fibre bias plates; the pinions rotate on these and were chosen to create a consistent friction surface for the lifetime of the differential, whereas other gear and pinion differentials allow the pinions to run directly on the housings, causing issues with polishing and, in extreme situations, material transfer.

Wavetrac differentials also come with the reassurance of a manufacturer-backed transferable lifetime warranty, offering both performance improvements and peace of mind for drivers looking to enhance their vehicle's handling capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How does the Wavetrac LSD's differential design enhance grip on entry and rear grip? The innovative design of the Wavetrac LSD improves grip on entry and enhances rear grip by maintaining traction even under heavy or high-speed braking, thanks to its unique ability to keep locking power consistent across the entire track.

  2. What are the benefits of upgrading from a standard differential to a Wavetrac LSD in terms of acceleration and cornering? Upgrading to a Wavetrac LSD transforms the standard differential into a mechanical differential that allows for quicker acceleration and faster cornering. This type of LSD adjusts diff behaviour to optimise turn-in and mid-corner smoothness, offering superior performance traction.

  3. How does the Wavetrac LSD contribute to the overall balance and performance of the Porsche 993 Carrera? The Wavetrac LSD significantly contributes to the corner balance of the Porsche 993 Carrera, ensuring extra power isn't wasted and is effectively translated into grip on acceleration, enhancing the overall drive and performance on the track.

  4.  How does the Wavetrac LSD optimise performance under varying driving conditions? The Wavetrac LSD features an adaptive suspension and a diff design that are crucial during heavy braking and high-speed conditions. The differential's locking power and friction discs enhance grip on acceleration, significantly improving handling over standard or stock diffs. Its unique design also ensures that hidden power is effectively utilised. Additionally, the integration of the shafts LR Torque tube with the Wavetrac LSD ensures a comprehensive setup for those seeking a performance upgrade that delivers durability and reliability through rough roads and demanding drives.
