More control, driving pleasure and safety – even with heavy loads or a full payload: the B6 is the damper upgrade for every use.
The B6 at a glance
With damping tuned to each vehicle in Bilstein's road tests, the B6 outperforms any OE damper – a particularly capable shock absorber.
Wide range of uses, consistently high performance
Beyond its performance, the B6 suits a particularly wide range of vehicles: from small city cars to sporty cars, powerful SUVs, vans, classic cars and campers, it gives consistent damping and high load capacity. Vehicle-specific tuning means balanced handling in every class, whatever the weight or use.
Product benefits
Better than OE: the B6 adds driving pleasure and safety. Made to OE standards, it is a high-quality performance damper covering a wide range of vehicles, and its OE-style outer body makes it as easy to fit as the original.
- Made in Germany: developed and made to top OE quality standards with strict quality control
- Damping curves developed for each vehicle
- Easy to fit like any OE damper thanks to the original design
- Can be fitted to one axle only, and is available for the rear axle – especially useful for towing or a bike rack
- Clearly better performance: optimal, consistent damping and better handling
What makes B6 stand out
- From cars and classics to campers: as an improved OE replacement, the B6 gives noticeably better handling across a particularly wide range of models and uses.
- Vehicle-specific tuning gives maximum control even with heavy loads or sporty driving. For most models the B6 is also available as a monotube or monotube upside-down design, which allows a working piston 63% larger in diameter.
- Easy to maintain, fitted like the OE damper, no hidden costs: ideal for drivers and workshops. It installs just like the original part and needs no registration.
- Bilstein dampers prove themselves in road tests on the OE test track and on public roads – where the right tuning is found that noticeably improves every car.
- Intensive testing – long-term stress tests, extreme salt-spray tests, scratch tests and 1:1 checks before delivery – for maximum durability and quality.
- Selected applications are developed and tested under extreme conditions on Bilstein's 7-post test rig, for top stability in demanding manoeuvres.
Where the B6 is used
- Safe and comfortable: in town, on country roads, motorways or off-road, the B6 adds everyday safety.
- More fun on the road: maximum grip and precise handling make every drive an experience, with confident control even in demanding corners.
- Excellent handling under heavy load: stays stable with heavy luggage, reduces roll and handles safely even at maximum load or with a full tank.
- Safe with a trailer or caravan: stabilises the towing car even with high nose weights, reduces sway and improves straight-line stability of the whole combination.
- The damper for vans: much more performance in reserve and a longer life than OE dampers, with stable handling even under hard use.
- Ideal for carrying bikes and e-bikes: reliably copes with the extra load on the rear axle.
- Modern technology for classics: more precise handling and higher safety reserves in classics and modern classics, while keeping the original character – and eligible for historic (H) registration.
- Motorhomes and campers: the B6 Camper and B6 Camper Advanced are developed specially for motorhomes and converted panel vans, for surprisingly comfortable, particularly safe trips.
Frequently asked questions
Which shock absorber do you recommend for my car?
B4 dampers are made and sold to OE specification, so the car's standard ride height and characteristics are kept; selection follows the car's specification. B6 and B8 dampers have their own tuning, set in road tests to Bilstein's "comfort and sport" philosophy. With OE functional dimensions both are height-neutral and need no registration. Thanks to its changed extended length, the B8 suits standard sports suspension and lowering or raising springs of up to 50 mm; its piston rod extended length is up to 20 mm longer or shorter than the OE version.
What is the difference between B4 and B6?
The B4 is an OE replacement that keeps the car's standard ride height and characteristics. The B6 is an improved OE replacement with its own road-test tuning and higher damping force; with OE functional dimensions it is height-neutral and needs no registration.
What is the difference between B6 and B8?
The B8's extended length is about 20 mm shorter, so it keeps the preload on a lowering spring. The B6 is for OE springs. For lift springs, the extended length is 20 mm longer.
Do you offer electronically adjustable dampers or kits that fit directly and keep the OE function (e.g. DCC, CATS, EDC, PASM)?
Yes – Bilstein offers plug-and-play solutions for many applications, marked "DT" (DampTronic). Whatever the car maker calls its electronic suspension, the catalogue lists the right match.
Will fitting B6 dampers to a classic car put its historic (H) registration at risk?
No – fitting yellow Bilstein B6 gas-pressure dampers would generally already have been possible when the classic car was built.
Can you email me the expert report for the dampers?
Dampers that match the OE functional dimensions do not need registration, so no type approval or parts certificate is needed. If used with lowering or raising springs, the springs need a parts certificate / ABE, available from the spring maker.
What is the tightening torque for the cartridge nut on B6 struts?
130 Nm for the cartridge cap nut.
The B6 cartridge is smaller in diameter than the OE cartridge – is that a problem?
No. The cartridge is clamped axially by the cap nut and held in place by the strut tube. The cap nut torque is 130 Nm.
Do I need special tools to tighten the cartridge cap nut?
Yes – the Bilstein cartridge wrench: part no. 14-244131 (E-MS 08/7) for 30 mm cartridges or 14-244148 (E-MS 08/6) for 36 mm cartridges.
How do I tighten Bilstein cartridge inserts?
With the Bilstein special wrenches: 14-244131 (E-MS 08/7) for the 30 mm cartridge and 14-244148 (E-MS 08/6) for the 36 mm cartridge.
Where can I get a GOCA certificate for Belgium or the Netherlands?
From Bilstein's regional trade partners.
How do I get expert reports?
All expert reports are in Bilstein's online catalogue, linked to the part number.
Is there installation information for workshops?
Dampers are fitted following the vehicle maker's instructions. For air springs and air suspension modules, where the work differs from the OE part, Bilstein provides installation information linked to the part number in its online catalogue.
